CDI problem - possible to fit a 34L/55W CDI on a 3AJ

Hi there

The CDI on my bike is toast. I bought a new aftermarket CDI that is exactly like the ones from a 34 L / 55 W. I was told that it should be an easy fit for a 3AJ, but it sure as hell does not seem like it.

Can someone help me out?

The 3aj has extra wires for the side stand and neutral switch cut outs.
It is possible to ignore these wires and just use the eight essential wires.

From the alternator there are five wires. Two for AC power for the CDI (red & brown) and three for the timing trigger pulse (red/white,green/white,green).
There are three other wires needed (orange,black) to the coil and black/white for the kill switch. These are common to all 600cc cdi bikes from 1983 to 1989.

Ignore any blue or blue striped wires and it will run.

Another troubleshooting tip I forgot to mention.

If you have no spark and suspect the ignition switch or kill switch might be faulty,
remove the tank and dis-connect the black/white wire at the CDI.
This will allow spark at all times.
Also remember that the CDI gets NO power from the battery or the ignition switch, it comes from its own private alternator!!

Thanks a bunch, this is great! I had compared the wiring schemes and it seemed that it was the blue ones, both blue and blue/white, I was missing with the 34L/55W-CDI.

Do I have to cover/block the blue wires that aren't used?

For people interested you can see the wiring diagram of a 3AJ

I have marked the blue (L) and the blue/white-striped (L/Y) with red color.

There`s a nice big colour wiring diagram Dres in the "Hot Links" section under manuals,
its a 6 page PDF you stick together to give a nice giant diagram (easy to read).

I have been browsing around and I know about the policty towards pictures of male genitals (the forum rules) but I hadn't seen the hot links. This is truely great and it could have saved me some time.

You can post a picture of your ballsack if you want to, worth a laugh i guess.

If you read through my 3AJ rebuild on page four it says about the diagram there, i found it invaluable when i was doing my wiring as its big & in colour (handy to trace the wires).

Im about to follow the advice given by Melb - ignoring the blue wires.

Can it be done wrong (i guess everything can :)?

Do I have to cover / block the unused wires?

Dont worry, our Dave knows his shit, and yes always put a bit of heat shrink over any bare wires (good pravtice) Mezo.
