Re: Bazmonaut's 3AJ rebuild

So yeah it's been a while. I have been working on it, honest! I have been a bit distracted by life which seems to roll on regardless of rebuilds...

I have painted the engine bits, and baked them in the oven. Came out really nice overall though does have some chips. Not too bothered because if ...

Re: Scott's 3AJ restore

Painful on so many levels, feel for ya. That is the most piss-poor packing job i've ever seen.

Re: Bazmonaut's 3AJ rebuild

Thanks Mezo - fwoah that's a nice looking linkage! I didn't paint or plate mine cos I wanted to make progress, now wish I had as it stands out like a sore thumb...

Re: Bazmonaut's 3AJ rebuild

Is nice...

...just checking: the linkage at the bottom is the right way around isn't? The joint should be pointing forwards and not backwards right? Can't find any reference pics.

Re: Bazmonaut's 3AJ rebuild

Wel, I'm sad to hear about the migration of your piston (is it a seasonal migration? :P )

These naughty parts are bed-hopping their way through my boxes I swear. Promiscuous little things.

But WAIT - hold my calls look what just walked in the door:

Re: Bazmonaut's 3AJ rebuild

First the good news: the honing operation went well. I'm calling it a success. Not as scary as I thought. Lots of oil helped by creating a 'wake' so I could adjust my in/out to match the rotation speed. Also some hand-holding from a mate.

More good news, I took Bowler's prompt and re-measured the ...

Re: Bazmonaut's 3AJ rebuild

you've measured the piston to cylinder clearance?

Hey Bowler - yes, measured the bore in several places and within spec. Measured it many years ago when the engine was first disassembled but I still have the numbers. Mmmm, maybe I'll measure it again...

It's a 4th OS piston 96mm. I got some ...

Re: Bazmonaut's 3AJ rebuild

Sooo.....

Good progress, some parts ready to paint. Still got some nooks and crannies to strip on some parts.

But holy crap now I have to hone the cylinder. Not done this operation before, and I have to say it is counter-intuitive to make scuff ...
