Noticed the reprinted workshop manual is back on eBay. It's from NZ. About £60 delivered.
Bought one years ago. Includes xt550 through to 1VJ.

Check the choke easily enough. Can see down the top of the carb with the tank and air
Box off. Take the top off and you can see the hole for the air. Also take the rubber off the choke and see if you can measure the distance to plunger, then disconnect it, push it all the way in and see if there's a ...

All electrical stuff available from electrex, and some new items have started appearing on eBay recently. Any carb stuff still from Yamaha genuine.

Can't remember all the order of reassembly, but to stop gears turning when tightening, I use a copper coin between the teeth of meshing gears. Soft metal, won't damage gears , but will lock it solid.

Carb set to standard as per manual, and checked for clear passages and jets? And sticky float valve, especially if it's been left a while.
And check all the pick up and stator windings while you're there.

When it does it again, try easystart to see if it's electrical or fuel.
Could be fuel supply getting hot past the tank to pump lines.
Could be carb not set up correctly.
Could be a fault in the stator, the windings for spark generation. Test the circuits next time it does it and still hot.
