After the experience won with the new XT 550 bike that engine was overbored to 600 cc with a new chassis and new suspension to face the challenges of the DAKAR race.

The XT 600 Z was born, common to that time the engine and frame got the same number.
For the European market the 34L and for the Australian market the 39E

For the first time a street bike was fitted with stainless reinforced brake lines combined with a big front brake disc.

Common to the 1983 34L and 1984 50T Swiss 50U models shared the shorter fork bottles (sliders) and the unique brake caliper attachment point.

The 1983 model had an new chain tension system, it had an internal fixing point and an exterior chain wear and tension marker. This was unpractical to maintain and was quickly changed to the exterior fixing point only, the swingarm layout was also changed & was all present in the 55W

The 34L and 50T shared the same tank decal pattern.

Also the seat and the luggage rack are the same.
