You've got a kickstart only crank....

I'll have a look in the morning... see what I've got. The only thing that may be wrong with it will be the small end... did you get a new con rod?
The future is not what it used to be....

I think you've got a 34L/55W crank... the reason it's shorter is because it doesn't have the sprag clutch for the starter motor...

Also .. I may be wrong here, but I'm sure the 1VJ part number for the crank is now superceded to 3TB....

The 1VJ & 3TB cranks I'm sure (apart from the shims) are identical...

Just caught this and that makes sense. That would also explain why it is so hard to find replacement 1VJ cranks, since 3TB has superseded it. What role do the shims have?

Yes the crank assembly comes with a new rod to match the crank halves. From Figure 3 (http://members.iinet.net.au/~mezo/tener ... 0Fiche.pdf) it comes with parts 3 + 5 + 6 + 2 + 4 and 30.

Will there be any kind of clearance issue with the shortened shaft? Since my electric starter is now out of the question, would it be okay to put the shorter crank into the cases? I assume most of the starter reduction gear parts will remain outside of the engine since their role is no longer possible due to the cracked aluminum casings

I am looking to put an electric start on my bike and while going over all the number and parts for what o watch for I saw the the left stub of the crank is longer but the rest of the crack was the same number, the shims were included with one of the assembly(I believe the older ones) and the other didn't. So the most of the crank is correct, If you put your original left stub end on the "new" crank, minus the shims, it will work.

I have all the parts but crank and cases but I've realized the correct electric start crank and cases are non existent here in the states so I have to keep icing my messed up ankle just to ride.

The difference is that the 3TB big end is slightly wider, so the shims aren't needed

Darn. Geoff, would you be interested in a trade? I seem to have a nice 55W/34L crank and no way to use it. I think it was actually yours to begin with but Ollie picked it up in Germany for you, yes? Would you swap out your 3TB crank for this kicker? Shipping's on me.

Scott's 3AJ restore

I think Dave originally bought the crank you've got ... I checked one if the cranks this morning, there's a pic of it earlier in your thread, it shows that someone had mushroomed the thread trying to get the stator off... That will need sorting out, I also have a 4PT crank which I need to check its the same ... I know it's a good one. I'll take some pics Monday ...Yes I would swap you

Yes, I bought the crank for myself originally, but when I saw Scottie was in desperate need I worked out with Olli to send it to the USA.

I am aware of the many differences in the cranks and was sure this one was correct for the electric start model. I cant go back on Ebay history to verify as they only keep 60 days.

I have since bought another crank for myself, but I really do need it for myself. I have 3 x 1Vj's and two of them need cranks :oilleak: .

I just missed a 3aj crank on Ebay.de that sold for 1 euro!!! (timezones messed me up.) So Scottie, they do come up, as do crankcases.
Just like fishing.....ya gotta be patient. :wink2:
"Don't worry," he said, "things could be worse ........."
So I stopped worrying and lo and behold, things did get worse!

I'm just now learning about ebay.de. That took way too long to learn! I found this 3TB crank from a 1992 XT600 3UW for about $100. The ship internationally too.

I'm still not fully familiar with all the interchangeable parts Yamaha has used across its bikes over the years, but a quick search on boats.net revealed the this bike's crank has the same parts number as the one used in the 3AJ (3TB-11400-00-00). That assumes that my 1VJ-11400-00 crank was in fact replaced by the 3TB crank as many a smart people have pointed out. Too bad I missed out on that $1 crank. I saw a lot of other parts available that have piqued my interest like an airbox and fuel pump. Am I mistaken by thinking that most of these auctions only ship within the EU?
